Visiting Podgorica, Montenegro

Visiting Podgorica is a must on your Montenegro sightseeing tour because it will make you understand why this heavenly corner is such an exotic travel destination.

So, here are some insights on why you should mark Podgorica on your Montenegro travel guide.

The capital of Montenegro was first known under the name of Ribnica, but since the fourteenth century the name was changed to Podgorica. The city, located near the Adriatic Sea, is an exotic mixture of Turkish, Austrian, Italian and German influences, but the proximity to Albania and Serbia have also left its mark.

The city’s architecture is varied: tourists can visit Turkish mosques and Orthodox churches – the Hristovog Vaskrsenja church is a great place to visit – as well as many historical monuments such as the Clock Tower, which survived multiple bombings during World War II.

When visiting Podgorica you will also discover modern office buildings, universities and fancy shopping centers, so the ancient capital of Montenegro is quite an active European city, too.

Podgorica is located close to major tourist areas (the Adriatic Sea, the Bjelasica ski resort, and the Skadar Lake – the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, hosting a great number of species of birds and fish), and is home for major tourist attractions like the old Turkish town, the King Nikola’s Castle and the St. George church.

When visiting Montenegro, you shouldn’t miss the chance to visit Podgorica.
