A Romantic Getaway on the Italian Riviera: Sanremo

Music, flowers and sea: these three things make Sanremo one of the most elegant locations on the Italian Riviera.
Sanremo was known as a select tourist destination since the 19th century, while another thing that added to its popularity was Festival Della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo (Sanremo Music Festival): the place where many famous artists of the last 60 years started their career.

Getting Around

The city is located by the Ligurian Sea and is composed of an old quarter known as La Pigna (with typical medieval buildings) and a modern town with shops, restaurants and cafes.

Sanremo is also known for its casino (built over 100 years ago), the luxurious beaches and the famous Corso Imperatrice (a terrace that stretches along the beach and whose construction was funded from donations made by Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia).
The city is easily reached by car (if you come from France, you can use the Autostrada dei Fiori – Highway of Flowers), train, plane (the nearest airport is also in France, at Nice) or boat (there are two ports, Porto Vecchio and Porto Sole, that can accommodate boats of different sizes).

The beaches are another major attraction for tourists and a place where you can try your fishing skills, you can dive or windsurf.

Sanremo Casino

Completed in 1905, Sanremo Casino is also a notable landmark of the city. The building, designed by French architect Eugenio Ferret, includes numerous game rooms and an opera theater. The game rooms host various cultural events, meetings and art exhibitions, while the theater is where the local symphony orchestra holds its concerts.
Sanremo Casino is a place for culture, entertainment and cuisine, but you must be at least 18 years old to enter.

City of Flowers

Mediterranean climate has made it possible for Sanremo to be known as la Città dei Fiori (City of Flowers) or Riviera dei Fiori (Riviera of Flowers).

Visiting the flower market, the gardens and parks should be on every list of things to do in Sanremo. Furthermore, if you visit Sanremo at the end of January you can witness the Flowers Parade: cars and boats on wheels decorated with flowers march through the city during this festival.
