The 5 Best Restaurants In Guatemala That You Can’t Miss
If you’re planning a trip to Guatemala, then you should make sure to take some time to try the country’s food and cuisine. The cuisines of Central America are known for their distinct blend of Spanish, Mayan, and African flavors. Depending on which part of the country you visit, the meals and snacks that you eat will be influenced by one or all of these cultures, making them all the more intriguing to try out. If you’re going to be in Guatemala City, then here are five restaurants that you can’t miss out on while you’re in town!
1 – La Cuchara de San Jorge
This restaurant is easily one of our favorite restaurants in all of Central America. Here, you can get amazing churrasco and flavorful empanadas that’ll have you coming back for more every time! If you’re feeling like some authentic Guatemalan food then La Cuchara de San Jorge is your spot! When it comes to price, they are on par with other places in town; their great food and service makes up for it though! Plus, they make a great steak, so if you’re into that kind of thing (who isn’t?) definitely consider trying out La Cuchara de San Jorge when you visit Guatemala.
2 – Café Barista
Tucked away in a quaint corner of La Merced neighborhood, you’ll find Café Barista – one of our favorite breakfast and lunch spots. They serve all kinds of coffee – specialty coffee drinks to lattes to cappuccinos, as well as some amazing pastries. Try out their Churros con Chocolate (Churros with Hot Chocolate) for breakfast or for a light snack with friends! You’ll love Café Barista! #3 – Mariposa Azul: How could we write about restaurants in Guatemala and not mention Mariposa Azul?
3 – El Bizcocho
A family-run restaurant famous for its cake and mole. El Bizcocho offers a wide variety of traditional Guatemalan dishes that use only organic ingredients, making it one of the best restaurants in Guatemala City for organic, locally sourced cuisine. If you’re an adventurous eater, I highly recommend trying their popular tripe soup—my mouth is watering just thinking about it! A trip to El Bizcocho is a must if you’re visiting Antigua and want to try delicious meals made with fresh local ingredients. If nothing else, stop by for dessert; their award-winning cakes are truly worth saving room for!
4 – Cafe Trópico
For a small country, there are quite a few excellent restaurant choices for any meal of day, but one is on another level: Cafe Trópico. The international menu at Cafe Trópico is fantastic and features items from Italy, France, Spain and Thailand, among others. What makes them stand out from other restaurants in Guatemala City? It’s all about location, ambiance and service. It’s located in Parque Central, which is next to Zocalo (the main square), which means you’ll have lots of things to do if you come early or stay late. It also helps that their services are world-class; you feel like royalty when dining here – both during your meal and upon leaving.
5 – Xocolat
Looking for a cool place to grab a sweet treat? Then you won’t want to miss Xocolat, one of Guatemala City’s best spots for fine chocolate. The store and café serves up chocolate in all forms—from ice cream and mousse to mint squares and truffles. Plus, if you have a sweet tooth but still need to stay healthy, Xocolat has a full menu of meals with decadent options like French toast, cheese boards, and salad.
